Directions Atlanta to Destin
I-85 South to I-65 South (Montgomery, Alabama) 195 miles.
I-65 South to Alabama state road Hwy 106 south-Georgiana Exit 114 (it’s at least 60 miles on I-65 or 45 minutes). Go left at the exit ramp which is south.
Take Hwy 106 to Hwy 31 south (Right on Hwy 31) which will also direct you to Hwy 55 south. You will be on Hwy 106 for about 5-6 miles (do not speed here), Hwy 31 for about 5-6 miles. Note that Hwy 31 turns right when you are on Hwy 31 and 55. Don’t follow Hwy 31 at that point, but just continue to go straight on Hwy 55 which is a 4 lane road (just remember to follow signs for Hwy 55 and you can basically ignore Hwy 31). You can easily travel 70 mph on this road. Note After about 8 miles, Hwy 55 comes to a stop at a blinking red light where you will turn left and continue to follow signs for Hwy 55 South
Continue on Hwy 55 south to Hwy 29 south or east (turn will be a right). You will be headed into Andalusia. There is a Taco Bell, KFC, Arby's and McDonalds in Andalusia (all are pretty gross).
Take Hwy 29 to Hwy 137 (black and white sign) south towards Florida (after going through Andalusia and when Hwy 29 narrows down from 4 lanes to 2 lanes you will see a sign that says Destin to the Left on Hwy 55- Do NOT take as its longer, just keep on going straight). Hwy 137 will be a “Y” turnoff off Hwy 29 about 5 miles outside of Andalusia. It is not a stop sign or traffic light. The only notice will have is a 137 intersection sign and direction signs for Fort Walton Beach and Crestview. You are on Hwy 137 for 15 miles until the state border
Hwy 137 turns into Hwy 189 at the state line of Florida/Alabama. Just continue straight, but you are now on Hwy 189. This stretch is another 15 miles.
Hwy 189 turns into Hwy 4. You want to follow Hwy 4 east. You do NOT have to turn off of 189 to get on Hwy 4. Follow signs to Niceville or Ft Walton beach or Destin. You are on Hwy 4 for 4 miles. It’s a slow crawl at 35 mph.
Take Hwy 4 east to Hwy 90 east towards Crestview (this will be a left). You will only be on this road for one mile when you come over a small concrete bridge/culvert which passes over some marsh (it is very possible to miss this as it is not much to see). After this bridge you want to take a right on Antioch road (traffic light). This road shortcuts you to Hwy 85 and you can avoid going through Crestview. If you miss it, you can pick up Hwy 85 in Crestview by just continuing on Hwy 90 (if you make the mistake and go into Crestview, it is speed trap city).
Antioch goes 5 miles and dead-ends into Hwy 85 at a traffic light and a Citgo/Tom
Thumb station on your right. Take a right. You will go on Hwy 85 for 13 miles until it dead-ends (note for your trip back that this road is named PJ Adams and not Antioch at this intersection).
Hwy 85 ends into Hwy 20. Take a left on Hwy 20 east through Niceville.
On Hwy 20, follow the signs for Destin for the Hwy 293 Mid-Bay bridge (toll) which takes you over the sound/water into Destin. You will be on Hwy 20 for 7 miles. Take a right at a light where there is a Waffle House on your right and BP station on your left. This will take you to a toll both where you will pay $3 to cross a 3 mile bridge that takes you over the sound/bay. This bridge/road will bring you to a traffic light at the intersection of Hwy 98 in Destin. You want to go right on Hwy 98 (west) at the Walgreens. Go a few miles and you want to turn left into Silver Beach Towers which is directly across the road from Airport Road which would be on your right. Turn left into the complex. Note that you will see Silver Shells Resorts on your left before Silver Beach. Silver Beach/Airport Road is .5 miles further west. You will not turn on airport road, its just a landmark of where the 19 story building is. There is also a Wings store and a Blockbuster on your right at the traffic light as Silver Beach is on your left (one down from Sterling Sands).
Miscellaneous Observations:
All the fast food restaurants in Alabama are gross and the service is poor.
One exception is the Chick Fil A at exit 9 on I-85 in Montgomery which is new. This is about 3 hours into the trip. There is also an Arby's, Whataburger, Wendy's, Red Robin (sit down burger place), Bonefish and a MOE's!!
Other larger spots to stop at are Montgomery I-85 exit 6 East Blvd. Traffic light every 10 ft on East blvd. If you travel down East blvd it will eventually hit I-65. It takes about 20 minutes. Other spots: Greenville, Alabama which is on I-65 which is about 3:45 hours into the trip. Exit 57 and 58 around Auburn, Alabama which is about 2+ hrs into the trip.
You can speed in Alabama, but do not speed in Florida. Copies of speeding tickets can be provided upon request.
Enjoy it!!
Directions from Destin to Atlanta
Take 293 Mid-Bary bridge towards Niceville.
After paying toll continue and go to intersection of hwy 20 (black and white sign). Take a left and proceed 20 west through Niceville.
Through Niceville you will pick up state hwy 85 North (right) (black and white sign). You will see this sign after seeing a sign for hwy 285 (black and white). Do not be confused and do not take this 285.
85 is a four lane highway and when you come to your second traffic light after coming down a hill (13 miles), you will take a left at the Citgo/Tom Thumb station on a road call PJ Adams (note that this is the same road that you took when you came except it was called Antioch Rd).
P J Adams will dead end after 5 miles into 90 west (black and white sign) and you will go left at this traffic light. This PJ Adams road takes you around crescent i.e. you cut-off going through town.
On hwy 90 west for a one mile and then pick up hwy 4 west (black and white sign). Go right on to Hwy 4.
Take 4 west until you see a sign for 189 north (black and white). 189 actually goes straight and 4 west goes left. Stay straight on 189. Just before you see a sign for 189, you will see a blue and gold sign that reads c189 (left). Ignore this and keep going straight until you see the black and white 189.
FYI, At the Florida Alabama state line, 189 becomes Highway 137 (black and white). Just keep on going straight.
Proceed and pick up signs for 29 north or west (black and white) towards Andalusia. You will turn right when 137 dead-ends into 29.
After you go through Andalusia (taco bell, McDonalds, KFC) you will turn left on to Hwy 55 at a traffic light (could also say Hwy 84). You will go around 3 miles and then have to turn at the blinking light to pick up 55 north which is a 4 lane highway.
55 North (4 lane) takes you into Georgiana. You will turn left about 2 miles from where 55 magically becomes 31 (goes from 4 lanes to 2 lanes). You will see signs for I-65 and hwy 106 (turn left). Go about 4 miles going 35mph and you will hit I-65 North.
I-65 North to Montgomery to I-85 North towards Atlanta. You are I-65 for about 60 miles.
